Michael Phelps is by far the world’s most decorated athlete in the legacy of the Olympics. With 28 medals, he stands as undisputed. Given that he hails from Maryland, his love for the Baltimore Ravens has no bounds. But him dissing out a reporter wearing Steelers merchandise describes his fandom for his hometown NFL franchise.

The love between Michael Phelps and the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens is no secret to fans. The franchise once displayed the olympian swimmer grabbing gold for the 200-meter individual medley at the jumbotron in one of their preseason games. Unarguably, the feelings and respect are mutual, and the ties go down strong.

Baltimore native Michael Phelps once taunted a Steelers supporter, although a journalist. When Phelps sees the reporter during an Olympics interview, he seems appalled. It quickly reminds Phelps that the NFL season is approaching when he sees the reporter wearing Pittsburgh Steelers merch.

Phelps expresses his feelings, “Is that a Steelers… Oh man, gah-lee, ugh” But then he spots someone with a Ravens merch, “There we go, there’s some Ravens (gear)… man, Steelers… Football season is back.”

Unsurprisingly, he answered that reporter’s question immediately. He responds at the Press Conference, “I always think we’re going to beat Pittsburgh. That’s an obvious answer. I think one of the cool things about that we always play each other really hard. As much as I’m not a Steelers fan, the games are really exciting, and we get a lot of intense hits.”

Michael Phelps, a native of Baltimore, seemed to take pleasure in the animosity between Ravens and Steelers. Despite usually supporting the Ravens, he enjoys watching games between rival division teams because of the tension and fierce hits. On the contrary, wide receiver Antonio Brown invested a lot of time in following Phelps’ Olympic journey and supporting the swimmer on social media. He was a Steeler that year.

Phelps is still one of the most adored American Olympians. However, judging by his remarks on the Pittsburgh Steelers, his fan following in Western Pennsylvania may have fallen. The Steelers enthusiasts may regret rooting for swimmer Phelps during the 2016 Rio Olympics.
