In the fast-paced world of football, time can be both a friend and a foe. When reflecting on the NFL‘s 2022 regular season, it’s clear that the current play clock rule has led to countless delay-of-game penalties and other unnecessary stoppages. But there’s a straightforward solution that can streamline the clock rules, making the game easier to follow while maintaining its speed and excitement.

The clock rules overhaul may not be a drastic change, but its impact on the game would be significant. By removing the clutter and confusion caused by multiple clocks, the NFL can pave the way for a more straightforward and enjoyable football experience.

During the 2022 regular season, a staggering 159 delay-of-game penalties were recorded, ranking it as the fifth-most common penalty type. Additionally, there were 92 penalties resulting from players rushing to beat the clock, leading to offenses having too many men on the field, illegal formations, shifts, and substitutions.

The constant need to burn timeouts to avoid delay-of-game penalties adds to the frustration, exhausting the enjoyment of the game for both players and fans. As there lie several drawbacks in the antiquated playbook rule, it can be revamped for better and more transparent play.

However, a few modifications in the play clock rule would be admired by NFL enthusiasts and players alike. Simplifying the game clock and introducing a few modifications directing the fairness of the game promises a myriad of benefits.
