Russell Wilson and Baker Mayfield met on Sunday in a clash of underdog quarterbacks. Normally, the NFL world would not categorise Danger Russell on that list. However, going by his present season, he will probably rank top in that order. Wilson’s Broncos lost in humiliating fashion. And he made Baker Mayfield look so much better in the QB role.
The former Seattle Seahawks QB is currently going through one of the worst seasons of his life. Russell Wilson rode high into Denver this preseason on his $245 million contract. However, the ride seems to have crashed. Former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee is more interested in talking about Baker than a seemingly washed Wilson. This was obvious in a recent episode of the Pat McAfee show.
When the Broncos and Rams game came up as the topic of discussion, Pat’s co-hosts brought up Russell Wilson’s disastrous display on the field. Wilson was benched towards the end, giving way to backup QB Brett Rypien. However, McAfee decided to talk about the winning QB Mayfield. “He is the one,” Pat said after Baker’s 2 TD effort in the 51-14 blowout win.

Russell Wilson will have trouble sleeping after the Broncos took some drastic steps this week

Compared to Baker’s 2 touchdowns, Russell only had one. However, it was the three costly interceptions that gave the game away to the reigning Super Bowl champions. And the 4-11 Denver Broncos didn’t sit around waiting for the magic to strike and took matters into their own hands. Broncos fired their head coach Nathaniel Hackett before he could finish his first season with Broncos Nation. And that certainly is the cause for concern for Russell Wilson.

“We went in with this mindset that we were going to be able to win this game, but in the end, we weren’t ready. That was a bad game. That was embarrassing.” Hackett said after the unacceptable loss to a struggling LA Rams. And this interview was probably the last nail in the Hackett coffin. Things can’t get worse for Danger Russ at the moment as the Broncos continue their search for their next head coach.

Baker Mayfield had a pretty rough year where in he was waived by the Carolina Panthers and proved everyone wrong when he arrived in Los Angeles. The Rams took a risk, and it paid off handsomely in the absence of first-string QB Matthew Stafford. Whether Russell Wilson can do the same in the two remaining games remains to be seen. Do you think the former Super Bowl champion QB comes back to Denver next year?
