Week 5 of the NFL has generated a lot of buzz. If not exactly for its action-packed games, then certainly for the officiating standards in the league. While fouls and flags are natural to the game of football, many fans have questioned the softness of these calls. Especially calls protecting the offensive players, as there were multiple roughing of the passer throughout the week. Tom Brady weighs in on whether Tua Tagovailoa’s concussion had anything to do with it.

The 45-year-old quarterback was himself subjected to a controversial personal foul by a defender. While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took on the Atlanta Falcons in the 5th week of the season. The controversy struck in the late 4th quarter when a game-turning sack on Tom Brady was reversed as a personal foul. It penalised the defender Grady Jarrett for roughing the passer. While it may appear that he threw Brady down to the ground, it can also be seen that the defender grabbed him and the rest was the work of momentum. Many fans view it as being one of the softest fouls to be given this season.

Tom Brady on the game-changing call

With recent concussion issues and safety hazards with Tua Tagovailoa. Brady has explained if he thinks that it had any contribution to the controversial call. He went on to explain that there is a different standard of game calling which differs from crew to crew. While the refs would want to keep their impact on the game to a minimum, they still have a job to do. “I’m sure most refs would like to stay out of it and make sure the players play a clean game. It’s just part of sports. That’s the way it goes,” added Brady.

The penalty came in the last remaining minutes of the game. While it was a one-possession game. Tampa Bay Buccaneers had the possession and were in their 3rd down with 5 yards to convert for a first. If the Atlanta Falcons had managed to get the ball back then, it would have given them the chance of a win back to them. However, the call came through, and Tom Brady’s undefeated streak over Atlanta remained intact.

Tua Tagovailoa’s mistreatment

The Miami Dolphins Quarterback was diagnosed with a concussion in the past week. While he was subject to a similar tackle, he was unfortunate enough to hit his head on the ground. Even though he looked visibly shaken, he was cleared and played their next game as well.

After consecutively hitting his head again in the second match, they took him to the hospital. The experts and fans were evidently shaken by the incident. It has become a central theme of discussion. And now this week with softer calls to protect the players, it could very well be the effect of the injury.
