The NFL offseason is that time of the year when many franchises plan whether to reset or strengthen the team. Many players are given extensions while some are cut as per the need. And this is the time when players and franchises set the tone for the future. A young QB reportedly set a high price for himself in the contract extensions by wanting a contract like Patrick Mahomes. And his franchise is not happy with the number.

The QB in question demanded as high as $45 million a year, according to reports. But that demand could just lead his team to cut him off.

Quarterback Daniel Jones may just price himself out of a job at the New York Giants. Many reports have suggested that the young QB has asked for a Patrick Mahomes-like yearly salary of $45 million to sign a contract extension with the Giants. And according to sports commentator Peter King, that might just cost him his job at MetLife Stadium.

“If I’m Joe Schoen (the Giants general manager) and Daniel Jones is asking for $45 million a year—and I truly don’t know if he is, I’m shaking his hand, wishing him good luck finding it somewhere and franchising him. If a team wants to give me high draft compensation for him, I’m taking it & moving on,” King said, according to Big Blue United.

The 2023 Super Bowl champion Mahomes signed a 10-year deal worth $450 million with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020. And Jones reportedly wants a similar yearly salary for a contract extension.

The Giants want to re-sign the QB who took them to the divisional round of the NFL postseason 2023. They have till March 7 to decide if they want to put a franchise tag on Jones. But that will result in a big cap hit. So according to King, it might be in the best interest of both parties to move on. But his performance will surely make the Giants think once before taking any drastic measures.
