For the Denver Broncos, the new season will be about focussing on moving forward from a last-season performance that they would like to get rid of. Apart from their $245 million blockbuster signing QB Russell Wilson not being at his best, the team Broncos also faced difficulties with player injuries. In the 2022 season, they had 25 players on the injured reserve. Now with the team signing a five-year deal with Sean Payton as their HC, they will be wanting to make amends to move ahead for playoff contention in the 2023 season.
But if Wilson fails to shine this season as well under Payton, does this mean that the $245 million QB will be withdrawn from Payton’s plans for the Broncos?

In a recent episode of the ‘Pat McAfee Show’, McAfee stated that former NFL RB Keyshawn Johnson said on NFL Live that if things don’t work out the way Payton wants for the Broncos next season, then there may be some major changes in the roster, including the QB position.
McAfee said, “I know Russell Wilson has signed a big deal. They bring Sean Payton in after Russell Wilson has signed his big deal. Sean Payton was not there when they signed Russell Wilson. Sean Payton wants to have success with Russell Wilson. But if Russell Wilson stinks, which there were some games last year where, was it him? Was it the offense? Was it the Head Coach? We have no idea what is was. Do you think Sean Payton would be able to pull the trigger and say ‘you know what Russ, here’s a clipboard. We have a guy now on the field that can throw and make completion because that’s what my offense is….”
Ever since the Broncos brought in their new HC, the team’s roster has been going through a change in order to bounce back from their dismal last-place finish in the AFC West Division.

Payton looking to turn the tides for the Broncos in 2023
While the dismal performance of Wilson is a cause of concern for the fanbase at Broncos, Payton is already strategizing on his game plans for the new season. While both the team and fans will want Wilson to shine and prove his worth, the Broncos brought in a QB backup in the form of Jarrett Stidham on a 2-year $10 million contract. They also brought in Kansas City Chiefs FB Michael Burton on a one-year $1.3 million contract. In a bid to further strengthen their weaknesses, they also signed Guard Ben Powers, LB Alex Singleton, and a few others in the offseason.
As the Broncos continue to be smarter with their investments in the hopes of not repeating what happened last year, fans will be waiting in excitement for their team to be on top of their game, and make it to the playoffs in a new light under Payton.
