Rich Eisen is perplexed by rumors implying that if Jimmy Garoppolo falters, one of the owners will come out and play (specifically Tom Brady). He ponders Mark Davis, the Raiders owner, and speculates if Tom Brady, a renowned quarterback, became a minority owner. Seeking clarity, he queries Mike Florio for official confirmation.
According to Mike Florio, for Tom Brady to become a Raiders owner, approval from at least 24 out of the 32 team owners is required. Additionally, Florio recently discovered that if Brady wishes to play as an owner, unanimous agreement from all 32 teams is necessary. Florio criticizes this rule, stating that having a figure like Tom Brady on the field would benefit the business. This could also mean that once Tom Brady gets a stake in the Raiders, his road back to the gridiron would be blocked.
He gives an example of the Denver Broncos, who faced a situation where all their quarterbacks were unavailable due to COVID-19 protocols, and they had to play a wide receiver at the quarterback position.
“They [Broncos] wanted to make one or two of their assistant coaches quarterbacks. And the rule is you can’t do it you just can’t do it.” Florio argues that it’s unfair to allow someone who is not officially part of the team to play, as they have access to team practices, meetings, playbooks, and more. Mike Florio stated in Brady’s context: “That’s why teams would oppose it so once this goes through he’s [Brady] done. I would be stunned unless he sells his interest so he can come back and play.” Mike believes teams would oppose such a move. And suggests that Brady should pause the acquisition of the Raiders ownership until he is certain he won’t play again.

How Brady’s comeback rumors took fire
Rumors about Brady’s return as a quarterback began circulating after news broke of Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury on May 29, 2023. Garoppolo, who had recently joined the Raiders on a lucrative three-year, $67.5 million deal, had undergone foot surgery during the offseason. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported an alleged agreement between Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl champion, and Raiders owner Mark Davis, pending NFL approval.
However, Brady refuted these rumors on June 1, 2023, expressing certainty that he would not be returning to the gridiron. He also emphasized his strong bond with former coach Bill Belichick. Should Brady’s potential involvement with the Raiders materialize, it would necessitate approval from other team owners and could raise concerns regarding the salary cap.
