Tom Brady wasn’t the only legendary veteran to hang up his boots this NFL season. However, after a demo-retirement last year, the seven-time Super Bowl champion knows the rules around retiring from the league quite well. Sadly, the same can’t be said for his first-ballot 2028 Hall of Famer batch mate JJ Watt.
The former Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans defensive end had no idea about the official retirement documentation he needed to submit to the league. Moreover, JJ only got wind of the formality after Adam Schefter reported what Brady did, post his February 1 retirement this year.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the former Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers no. 12 filled the official paperwork today “with the NFL and NFLPA, reconfirming his Feb 1 retirement.” And JJ Watt fell from the clouds after knowing this.
“I was unaware there was paperwork. Definitely not gonna fill that out, but definitely retired,” the legendary DE tweeted hilariously. However, fans think JJ should follow Brady’s suit if he doesn’t want to secretly remain a free agent.
Just never gets into the hall of fame because he is still a free agent in 2030

Does this mean he won’t be HOF eligible? Or is the paperwork just a formality?

Did they recently change the rule from 7 years to six years after retirement to be eligible for the HoF. Or is this because of Brady?

TB12 retired in February 2022 after losing to the LA Rams in the playoffs last year. However, Brady changed his mind only 40 days later. And the NFL may have devised some extra paperwork formality just because of Tom Terrific.
Tom Brady is definitely not coming back
JJ Watt is not making any comeback. Besides, he’s enjoying retirement. This was obvious from the message he left Tom Brady after the latter announced his emotional farewell. After reaffirming TB12’s G.O.A.T. status, Watt added the new itinerary for his 2028 Pro Football Hall of Fame QB friend. “PS- The newly retired group meets on the golf course every morning at 10 am. Drinks are on the new guy. So bring your wallet,” Watt tweeted.

And with yesterday’s official filing, Tom Brady has also sealed all remaining questions about his future. Besides, fans still had hopes of a return to the gridiron after Brady announced that he will not be joining the Fox Sports NFL desk until the fall of 2024.

However, Brady explained his decision. The 15x Pro Bowler wanted to be prepared for the $375 million broadcasting job at hand and didn’t want to jump in haphazardly. “Also, even in the future, I want to be great at what I do,” Tom told Colin Cowherd in an interview on the Herd last week.
