New York has been all about their new quarterback Aaron Rodgers the past few weeks. Capturing almost every headline coming out of the Gang Green camp, the 4x league MVP may have taken away some of the attention necessary for the other assets on the roster. Namely, his future blindside protector, Mekhi Becton. The defensive big man is simply not happy with the treatment he is receiving at the Metropolis under HC Robert Saleh.
In a recent candid and explosive interview with Bob Glauber of Newsday, the offensive tackle expressed the lack of the team’s concern for his injuries. That’s a pretty serious accusation, considering a lot of A-Rod’s well-being in the pocket will depend directly on Becton. So what did the Jets do wrong according to him?

Aaron Rodgers’ arrival from the Green Bay Packers in late April shook up not only New York but the entire NFL world. And despite the NY Jets now being in the race for title contention, Rodgers’ arrival may have covered up some far more concerning issues in effect. Jets offensive tackle Mekhi Becton recently let out his frustration with the way his offseason training activities have started out. Especially pointing out that it was a mistake to assign him the right tackle role.
“It made no sense to put me at right tackle. I hurt my right knee. That’s going to be the knee that I put the most pressure on,” Becton said. “I got forced to play a position I don’t play. I was pretty much telling them I wasn’t feeling good the whole time in camp. And I was told I shouldn’t be complaining. Go out there and do it. I was limping throughout the whole practice, and I just took a step and my knee buckled. And I got hurt again and had to get reconstructive knee surgery.”

Becton clarified that despite explaining his situation to the coaches, “no one cared.”
Earlier this month, in a now-deleted Instagram post, Becton had written, “I. AM. A. LEFT. TACKLE.” When asked about his comments, head coach Robert Saleh said, “Go earn the left tackle.” So, it’s not entirely surprising to see Becton’s overdue outburst.
A fired-up Becton has already transformed himself for Aaron Rodgers
Being put on the depth chart as the third-string tackle is certainly providing the necessary push to Becton. “Within a week, I’m going to be starting on that left side,” he said. This year, the NFL world saw an incredible transformation for the OT. Becton, who weighed 370 pounds during his drafting and 400 pounds last offseason, has done some fascinating work with Parisi Speed School. This off-season Becton stands tall at a leaner 342 pounds frame. His regime included the right diet and intense workouts for 75 minutes a day, five days a week.

Becton has to stay healthy this year as the Jets turned down his fifth-year option, making him a contract player for 2023. If he can protect Rodgers and make it to 2024 injury-free, a huge payout awaits. If not, big man Becton’s NFL future might be in serious jeopardy.
