Megan Rapinoe is an icon in the National Women’s Soccer League. The Presidential medal of freedom recipient began taking a knee to support Colin Kaepernick and his protests. Further, this led to the former MVP getting worldwide attention and increasing criticism.

Soccer star Megan Rapinoe joins the Pod Save America host Jon Favreau for a wide-ranging discussion. The Women’s World Cup Champion discloses her initial days of facing public scrutiny after taking the knee for the first time in 2016. It did not impress the people, but Megan felt they were “just going to be cynical about it.”

“It was interesting. I think admittedly, I was very naïve to the level of racism, and that sort of just deep-seated. I saw the way that people were reacting to Colin when he first knelt and reacting to other players that knelt. I don’t know if I thought, ‘Oh I’m not gonna be treated that way,’ but yeah, I was. I don’t know if I was shocked by it because it did make sense. I think that sort of solidified even just the way that I approached social media or the media in general. I was like, oh, I understand the game now. It’s just like people are just going to be cynical about it. They’re not actually listening to anything that Colin says,” Rapinoe mentions.
