The Denver Broncos’ story is becoming more and more depressing every week. The fairytale season the fans hoped for when Russell Wilson was pulled in, has turned into something of a nightmare. And it doesn’t help that he finishes every press conference, even for games he lost, by saying “Broncos Country, Let’s Ride!” His catchphrase is probably the most painful reminder ever for the Broncos’ fans, a reminder that spending $245 million to trade him might be a mistake. ESPN’s Mike Greenberg’s opinion resonates with probably everyone involved with the Broncos: Russell Wilson is bad.

In his show ‘Greeny’, Greenberg talks about how Russell Wilson is the worst at assessing the room. He brings up two events to prove his theory. The first is the press conference after the abysmal loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Which he ended with his infamous catchphrase. The second is another press conference, wherein he credits his fast healing to having “wolverine blood.”

“There is one person in the world who reads the room worse than anyone I can ever remember. And that person is Russell Wilson… I hate that I’m about to make fun of Russell Wilson…..[but] I cannot ignore what Russell Wilson has done. So the whole world kind of went in on Russell Wilson after they had an unbearably terrible game, and he finished his press conference by saying ‘Broncos Country Let’s Ride’…… There are certain moments where that just is not the right thing to have come out of your mouth.” Said Greenberg.

On the Wolverine blood statement, Greenberg seeks the opinion of his co-hosts, and they all seem to chime in on his opinion. “I mean that’s something you say when things are going great….. is that just not reading the room? When you’re playing as badly as he is playing, should you be suggesting that the miracle recovery you are undergoing right now is based upon Wolverine blood?”

Denver Broncos are stuck with Russell Wilson for the foreseeable future

When Russell Wilson inked a seven-year, $245 million deal with the Broncos, the expectation was for them to become a Super Bowl-contending team. Now, at 2-4, they’re on the track to finishing last in their division. And Wilson is not living up to his potential. It’s as simple as that. He’s 26th in the NFL in QB ratings, while his replacement at the Seattle Seahawks, Geno Smith, is 4th.

One could place some blame on the new head coach, Nathaniel Hackett. Maybe Wilson isn’t able to adjust to his coach’s offensive ideas. And maybe Melvin Gordon‘s obsession with fumbling the ball is also a factor. But neither of them are getting paid as much as Wilson is. And the sad part for the Broncos fans? They can’t even get rid of him.

According to Wilson’s contract, the Broncos will have to pay him $107 million dead cap even if they bench him this year. $85 million next year, 49.6 million the year after. Essentially, they can only even think about cutting him loose in 2026, when the dead cap is around $31.2 million.

But what is even more problematic, is even if they decide to bench him, they gave up their first and second-round picks for next year’s draft. So their hopes of nabbing a good QB in the 2023 draft look very slim. What will the Broncos do? Will Wilson make a comeback for the Broncos anytime soon?
