“I Felt Like There Was a War Being Fought…”: Tom Brady’s Teammate Chris Godwin Looks Back to His Road to Recovery From a Grueling Injury

The Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady just reinforced his wide receiver corps ahead of Week 5. Veteran wideout Chris Godwin is back to action along with Julio Jones and Mike Evans already playing at their best in this year’s campaign. However, the receiver has come a long way in battling a myriad of injuries.

The 26-year-old happens to be a strong weapon for the franchise since his induction in 2017. But, last season Godwin faced a devasting ACL-MCL tear which ended his 2021 campaign.

It was the Week 15 game against the Saints, and Godwin had a bad hit with P J Williams, instantly landing him on the turf. The knee injury was earlier speculated as an MCL injury that could eventually make him ready for the playoffs, but scanning and X-rays identified it as a season-ending ACL tear.

The former Super Bowl Champion underwent surgery in January this year and remained in rehab since then. While speaking in an interview, he explained the pain and hardships he faced during this period.

“For a few months there, it felt like there was a war being fought inside of my leg,” Godwin recalled. “That was especially the case for the first couple of weeks because it is a lot happened. There was a lot of trauma that my body went through.:

“…things have been cut, there are screws in there, there are stitches, there is a lot of healing that had to go on for my body, and that is not a comfortable process at all,” he added to his explanation.

Chris Godwin had the love of his life for emotional support

Behind every successful man, there is a strong woman. This idiom rightly applies to Godwin, who had a speedy recovery in a matter of months. All the time, he was accompanied by his wife Mariah, who married him just a month after he won the Super Bowl title.

Her ideology was pretty simple, go brick-by-brick. “One thing we would always say is laying one brick at a time, day-by-day,” Mariah remarked about the situation. “Do not worry about building the whole house. We have a magnetic notepad tally on the fridge that says ‘Bricks,’ and we have made a tally of how many bricks have been laid so far,” she said. The duo met each other in freshmen year and since then remained close.

She explained how they carried out each day’s task and progressed slowly after Godwin drilled his legs with screws and bolts from the surgery. Although his Week 4 return against the Chiefs couldn’t bear fruit, the falcons are next on the line, and the veteran will try to come out of their current slack.
