In the interview, referee Carl Cheffers justified his decision terming the incident as ‘Roughing the passer’. He penalized the Chiefs’ defensive tackle, Chris Jones, after sacking the Raiders’ QB Derek Carr. The twitteratis exploded with discontent over the decision, wanting the referee to concede his mistake.
Unraveling the events leading to the controversy
The match started on a promising note for the Raiders as they led 7-0 through the first quarter courtesy excellent 58-yard TD pass from Derek Carr. At one point in time, the raiders were leading the Chiefs 17-0. However, the Chiefs diminished the gap through Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes‘ interlinking. Late in the second quarter, Jones sacked Carr from behind in a superb play. However, the referee gave a judgment in the QB’s favor.
ESPN’s NFL journalist Adam Teicher posted an update regarding this issue on Twitter where he interviewed Cheffers on this incident.

On the reason behind the penalty, Cheffers quoted, “The quarterback is in the pocket and he’s in a passing posture. He gets full protection of all the aspects of what we give the quarterback in a passing posture. So, when he was tackled, my ruling was the defender landed on him with full body weight. The quarterback is protected from being tackled with full body weight. My ruling was roughing the passer for that reason.”
Social media strongly opinionated on Cheffers’ views
Comments came outpouring the above-mentioned post from the nooks and corners of the Twitter spectrum.
Some fans tried to reason with the referee on social media.
I appreciate the question but that’s straight up wrong on his part. The quarterback becomes a defender as soon as the ball is recovered. The recovers becomes a runner. It is impossible for a runner to “rough” a defender.

Right, but he didn’t come down with his full body weight..? He used his left arm to slow his fall

While other fans were in a more attacking mode as they downright canceled the reasoning by the referee.
Dude just doesn’t fully understand the rules. Once he loses the ball, the protection rules go out the window

Appreciate you asking, Adam.
Bottom line: no NFL referee is ever going to admit they made a mistake. They’re apparently wired to never consider, with any actual effort, the possibility they’re wrong.

Meanwhile, a Chiefs fan asked why the same provisions did not apply when Patrick Mahomes got tackled.
So, then why not the same call on the Mahomes slam sack? Need consistency!!

In the end, this controversial decision would have been much more lethal in deciding the match if the receiving side didn’t go away with a 30-29 win over them. This incident also emphasized the need for accurate referring in crunch matches. What is your opinion on this matter?
