The contract extension deadline is over. And Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott is among the 12 franchise tag players in the NFL who couldn’t reach a long-term deal.

Therefore, now, the 26-year old quarterback will have to stay with the Cowboys in 2020 in exchange for $31.4 million.

It also means that before 2021, there’s no way these two parties can bind in a new contract. This is because the NFL forbids clubs from negotiating with franchise tags while the season is ongoing.

Dak Prescott wants to win the Super Bowl

Prescott spoke with USA Today. In the interview, he said, “I’m a Cowboy and couldn’t be happier. I look forward to working along coach (Mike) McCarthy, the staff, and my teammates to be the best team we can be in the pursuit to our goal of a Super Bowl.

The year 2019 was a particularly spectacular one for Dak, as far as statistics are concerned. However, personal achievements aside, his team missed the playoffs and finished 8-8.

Following the disappointing season, the Cowboys discarded their coach (Jason Garrett) and brought in Mike McCarthy as his replacement. Indeed, the Dallas side is eager to turn their fortunes this season.

Will the lack of a long-term contract affect Prescott’s mindset on the field? Dak doesn’t think so. He said, “Obviously, I want to win. I’m somebody that I’ve gambled on myself my whole life.

That’s kind of what it is. I’ve been doubted and told people they’re wrong. When you’re playing out a situation, when you’re playing out a contract, there’s no different mindset than that.”

Sources also claim that the Cowboys’ Vice President, Stephen Jones, was particularly eager to sign a new deal with Prescott. In fact, he did even call Dak prior to the deadline, for discussing negotiations.

However, in the end, an agreement failed to materialize.

The latest contract that the Cowboys offered Prescott was a five-year deal with guarantees worth $110 million. But the 26-year-old wasn’t interested to sign a five-year extension.
