However, a particular move against Donna Vekić in the finals of the San Diego Open raised a few eyebrows. The world number 1 spoke about it in a recent interview.

Iga Swiatek on her hand-waving incident

In the final of the San Diego Open, Swiatek was up against Donna Vekic of Croatia. The unseeded Croatian did exceptionally well in the tournament and gave a tough challenge to the world number 1 in the final as well. After winning the first set 6-3, Swiatek looked in trouble in the second set.

Meanwhile, Swiatek got restless and raised both her arms for a moment after returning the ball to the other side. However, Vekic still won the point and also the set. Later, the world number one staged a strong comeback and handed a bagel to the creation in the decider set. However, fans were not happy with the hindrance Iga had committed. Although Swiatek was quick to apologize for her actions, the 21-year-old was getting a lot of hate. In a recent interview, she spoke about the same.

“I can’t control it, but I hope it will never happen again. We are working on it. It is a stress reaction to what is happening. It is an involuntary reaction. I did it during the US Open, and as I recall it was a stressful moment. In San Diego, I did it unconsciously,” Swiatek clarified.

Up next, Iga is set to play in the WTA Finals in Texas.
