NFL is a league of young talents who are ready to give their all to the game. And this hunger sometimes makes them give some remarks which become the talk of the town. In a recent episode of the ‘Pat McAfee Show’, an incident that occurred at a hotel involving Colts‘ rookie wide receiver Josh Downs and quarterback Anthony Richardson was discussed. While the conversation initially centered around the two players practicing together, it soon shifted to the rookie’s comments regarding his future with the team.
However, the host AJ Hawk and his guests were quick to criticize the rookie’s remarks. They expressed their skepticism towards his confidence. They stated that it was uncommon for rookies to make such bold predictions about their future with the team. One guest even went so far as to point out that in the last five years, no player had ever made such a comment. What did the rookie say then?

The conversation about that hotel incident involving rookie WR Josh Downs and QB Anthony Richardson took a controversial turn. While discussing the incident, where the two were seen practicing together, the conversation turned to the rookie’s comments about his future with the team.
Anthony Richardson had stated, “I think we had just finished like meeting or something and you text me like when we get to the hotel you want to throw, I’m like yeah man I’m down for it, so uh threw the ball with him you know for like 30 minutes we chopped it up got to know him a little bit but you know he’s a dog he’s always ready to work…”
Host Pat McAfee and his guests were quick to criticize the rookie’s comments, expressing their disbelief at his confidence. “I am more worried about the fact that a rookie wide receiver said it’s going to be a good few years here most people say it’s going to be a good I want to have a good career at this point,” one host stated. And according to him what he wanted to say, “At what point when you’re a rookie do you say I’m looking forward to having a good few years here? Are you saying I’m looking forward to having a great career with the Indianapolis Colts? That’s usually what it said.”
He also clarified his comment, “I’m not nitpicking but in the past five years paying attention that’s usually a player say”.
Despite the backlash, the rookie’s comments may have been misinterpreted. When he stated “a good few years,” he may have been referring to his immediate future with the team rather than making a long-term prediction. He may have been trying to be humble and not make any grandiose statements about his future.
Overall, the conversation surrounding the rookie’s comments shows the intense scrutiny that NFL players face in their interactions with the media.

Josh Downs was selected as the 11th wide receiver during the 2023 NFL Draft. This fact will remain with him throughout his entire career, but he is fortunate to have a mentor in his wide receivers coach, Reggie Wayne.
Wayne understands what it feels like to be overlooked on draft day and has shared on numerous occasions that during the 2001 NFL Draft, Washington told him they would select him but ultimately passed on him. They chose instead to draft Clemson wide receiver Rod Gardner with the 14th overall pick.
