Jerry Jones is known for creating an empire out of a loss-making franchise, the Dallas Cowboys. After his purchase of the team, the Cowboys went on a Super Bowl winning spree which has made Jones arguably the most competitive owner in the NFL of all time and the most successful one in Dallas.
Had it not been because of his Arkansas Razorbacks teammate Jimmy Johnson, who was the first head coach of the Dallas Cowboys under the ownership of Jerry Jones, the franchise wouldn’t have gotten the necessary push. With Johnson as the Head Coach, the Cowboys claimed two Super Bowls back to back (1992-1993 seasons). However, after winning the Super Bowl XXVIII in 1994, Johnson and Jones parted ways after friction between the two.

The toxic split between owner Jerry Jones and HC Jimmy Johnson
After his breakup with Jimmy Johnson, Jerry Jones recruited his former Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Barry Switzer as the new head coach of the defending champions. Switzer, who coached the Razorbacks from 1961 to 1965 also had Jerry Jones (offensive lineman) and Jimmy Johnson (defensive lineman) on his national championship winning team in 1964.
During the first press conference of the Cowboys training camp in Oxnard in 2021, Jerry Jones got emotional recalling his spat with Johnson. He even revealed how the newly appointed head coach Barry Switzer even blasted on him for the toxic split.

“When I look back at the time that we got to enjoy and what happened to us during that time, I go back to what Barry Switzer said,” Jones said. “Barry Switzer came in the office and Jimmy had just left. Barry came down from Norman, Oklahoma, to talk about getting the job. And he comes in and he said, ‘Where’s Jimmy?'”

Jones continued: “Now, Barry had coached us both. He said, ‘Where’s Jimmy?’ I said, ‘Jimmy’s gone.’ He said, ‘Well, that’s not right. Get him. Get him in here. Where’s Jimmy?'”
“I said, ‘Barry, Jimmy’s gone. We’re sitting here talking about you being the coach.’ I said, ‘What in the world are you so anxious to talk to Jimmy about?’ He said, ‘I just want to get both you little a–holes on this couch and ask you both how could you f*ck this up.'”

The Cowboys owner though has created an empire worth looking back on, however, his past with Jimmy Johnson still makes him sentimental to this day.
