Robert Saleh is a frontrunner for the Detroit Lions job. The Lions recently let go of Head Coach Matt Patricia. Saleh is the current defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers.
Although he has never had a head coaching position, his defensive soundness has been universally admired. 49ers Cornerback Richard Sherman spoke to the press about Robert Saleh and how good he is.
Sherman said that Saleh deserves more credit than he gets from the league. “You got to give Robert Saleh an abundance of credit. You have to give him an unusual amount of credit. I don’t think he’s getting enough credit.”

For Sherman, he says that Saleh’s ability to adapt to injuries and uncertainty is what makes him a great coach. He takes all the challenges put in front of him in stride.
He said, “Not only here but in the league, but in general. To have the injuries that we’ve had, week after week. The setbacks, week after week, we lose two D-linemen in the league.
“We have uncertainty. We lose backers throughout the week. We’ve got guys who can’t practice.”
Richard Sherman on Robert Saleh
Sherman noted that Saleh never made excuses or complained about the challenges in front of him and still made the team a Top-5 defensive team.
He said, “It’s week after week and he never makes an excuse. We’re still Top-5 defense in almost all every category. There are guys out there with – Pro-Bowlers who never lost, never had an injury, any adversity and they’re not putting out a Top-5 defense.”

“He’s making great plans week in and week out, and we’re making it happen. I expect him to be a Head Coach next year because of what he’s able to do.”
It will be interesting to see if Saleh will get the Detroit Lions job during or after the end of the season. Saleh is one of the most underrated coaches in the NFL. He has the seal of approval from most of his players to become a Head Coach.
