The Indianapolis Colts have decided to part ways with Frank Reich. Reich had been with the Colts for four seasons. He has become the first mid-season firing by owner Jim Irsay. But beyond all of this, what surprised most of the NFL world and Aaron Rodgers was their new interim head coach selection. Following the announcement of Jeff Saturday taking over the reins in Indianapolis, the consensus in the league is that of shock.

Over on the Pat McAfee Show, A-Rod is a recurring guest. The duo hold an extremely friendly relationship, often enabling each other to speak freely, and dig for answers. However, when it came to his friend’s old franchise, hiring an inexperienced coach, the 38-year-old quarterback could only express his surprise. While they pressed Rodgers for an answer, all he could say was how shocked he was to see this happening. “I was very surprised,” added Rodgers. “It’s so rare… I think he was coaching high school, right?”

The fact that the former NFL player turned analyst has no experience in coaching beyond high school, became a point of great scrutiny. This has left many people inside and outside of the NFL sphere unsure of how to react to the news. It is definitely something which does not happen often. A-Rod highlighted it acknowledging how rare it is. While he emphasized his lack of coaching experience. He even talked about how unusual the appointment is. “I mean, it’s different. Usually, you just appoint somebody from the staff, ” said the back-to-back MVP.

In defense of Rodgers and others who find the development startling, it is truly unusual to see someone sack an HC role without having much experience in the league. Compared to established coaches, no one knows what to expect from the completely new personnel.

However, this seems to be just another major head-turning decision by the Colts. Owing to a record of 3-5-1 in 9 weeks of NFL. The upper management deemed that it important to make changes. First by benching newly acquired NFL powerhouse Matt Ryan and then change in the coaching. While this move comes with its own share of risk, it does not mean the fans can not hope for the best. Just like A-Rod, who hopes it all works out for the best for the Colts, if not for anyone, then for his friend Pat at least.
