Quarterbacks were hot commodities in the recently concluded NFL 2020 Virtual Draft and comprised of 3 of the top 6 overall picks. These included top draft pick Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals), 5th draft pick Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins), and 6th pick Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Chargers). The Chargers’ top draft pick has managed to make a good impression on his new team.
Justin Herbert earns praise from Los Angeles Chargers coaches
The 22-year-old Oregon Ducks star participated in his new side’s virtual minicamp. As per NFL Media’s Jim Trotter, the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback coach Pep Hamilton was impressed by his side’s new pick. Trotter asked Hamilton what he learned about his quarterback that he didn’t know before.

As per Trotter, the quarterback coach replied, “Look, we knew about his intelligence, we knew about his athletic gifts. What I didn’t know is how important football is to him. He wants more, he wants to understand all of the conceptual things behind a play design. That’s important because you need to understand and see the big picture to succeed at the position.”

Earlier, in a zoom call with reporters, the Chargers draft pick said, “I take pride in my preparation. This type of learning I feel comfortable with, being able to pick up as much as I can. I’ve always taken pride in whether it’s schoolwork or in the classroom. This type of learning situation I feel comfortable with. I’m going to do my best to pick up as much as I can in this situation. When that time comes when we go out on the field, I know that I’ll be ready.”
The Chargers have high hopes for Herbert who comes in to replace 14 seasons starting quarterback Philip Rivers. Rivers initially played as back to Drew Brees before inheriting the role and making it his own. In his first full season, he compiled a 14-2 record. Next year he took the team to the AFC Championship game.
