Jerry Jones is one of the eldest and most respected owners in the NFL. His team, the Dallas Cowboys, is the highest valued sports franchise in the world. Even though they haven’t achieved success in recent years, they have a glorious past that they boast of.

The Cowboys won three championships in the 1990s. Since then, the franchise has kind of become the face of the NFL in the global market. One of the main reasons for their dynasty was their head coach, Jimmy Johnson. He led the Cowboys to the first two championships in the 90s era. Moreover, he had set the foundations of an excellent run for the franchise.

Jimmy left the franchise after the 1993 season, and it was very controversial. He had success with the team, and his exit came as a surprise to many people. However, the people close to the franchise knew this was coming. Former Cowboys DC Dave Wannstedt revealed the scenario around his exit on Colin Cowherd’s podcast.

He said, “We were up in Orlando at the league meetings and that’s when everything broke loose. Jimmy and Jerry had some words, we were at the meetings and we used to sit together at all the NFL meetings.”

Wannstedt added, “So, I was waiting for him down by the lobby and he came down and he had that look on his face and I said meetings this way and he says not my meeting and he was heading for the door and he was driving a Corvette then he jumped in that Corvette and gone…”

Dave Wannstedt tells the tale of Coach Johnson’s exit after Jerry Jones became the ‘Star’ Voice

Dave Wannstedt, the former Defensive Coordinator of the Cowboys continued to give details about the exit of Jimmy Johnson. He said, “I think at that point Jerry believed that he could win and do it without Jimmy Johnson, and Jimmy was the guy! If Jimmy wasn’t going to be the guy and he wasn’t going to be the voice, he wasn’t going to share that with anybody.”

Both Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones had big egos. As a result, they weren’t able to work with each other longer. They enjoyed a successful spell together, but fans are left to wonder how much more they could have won if Jimmy had stayed much longer.
