Andy Reid runs a tight ship. Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach has one of the best signal callers at his disposal. And while Mahomes continues baffling the world with his ridiculous passes, there is another piece to the puzzle. Mahomes coupled with Travis Kelce has emerged as one of the best quarterback-tight end tandems in the entire league and a lot of the credit goes to Andy Reid’s son. But how?

The Chiefs drafted Kelce in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and since then Andy Reid has structured his entire offense around Mahomes and Kelce, winning two Super Bowls in the last four years.

Travis Kelce has been outperforming everyone since the day he joined the Chiefs. He has already cemented himself in the Kansas history book, ranking second in franchise history for most receiving yards by any player and second-most receiving yards by a tight end. Kelce continued with the trend becoming the fastest tight end in NFL history to 8,000 yards surpassing Rob Gronkowski. While Kelce does benefit a lot from playing around Andy Reid, the two also share some history.

The first time Andy Reid saw Travis Kelce play was against Temple, and Travis annihilated the competition. While Reid was utterly impressed with Kelce’s talents, it was his son who couldn’t help but swoon at Kelce’s athletic build.

My son kept selling me this tight end. It’s unbelievable Kelsey brothers like incredible 265 pounds of the beast ” recalled head coach Andy Reid during his appearance on the ‘New Heights’ podcast.

But even back then Kelce was his usual confident self, and Reid paved a perfect trip down memory lane, “Games over, they just destroyed Temple, and I come over to the locker room and he comes walk be popping  out just giving me the business like we’re long lost, friends,

But Andy Reid also embodies the same competitive spirit he breaths into his players. Right after that moment, Andy Reid’s first thought was to acquire Travis Kelce and “rip his heart out“, and that’s exactly what he did.

With Mahomes and Reid leading the team, Kelce gets the perfect opportunity to go out there and have his share of fun, both on and off the field. And a lot of the credit goes to the vision that Andy Reid had for him.

Andy Reid: The NFL genius

Travis isn’t the only Kelce drafted by Andy Reid, his older brother Jason Kelce also owes a lot to the great visionary of the game. Andy Reid has always been one of the greatest at spotting late-round talent and developing them into elite NFL players.

Just look at his tenure as the Eagles’ head coach, yes Reid did draft Jason Kelce, but he also drafted Donovan McNabb. McNabb wasn’t one of the highly touted QBs at the time, but Reid once again showed his immaculate eye for talent and handed over the QB1 spot to McNabb. What followed next was simply marvelous as McNabb, along with head coach Andy Reid, led the Eagles to five NFC Championship games.

Even with the Chiefs, Reid drafted top-tier talent such as Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. Reid was perfectly aware of the red flags surrounding Travis Kelce and even eluded to it during his conversation with the Kelce brothers.
