The Dallas Cowboys are America’s Team. They have a very large fanbase around the nation, and many people will recognize it when a Cowboys player walks near them. However, the biggest of stars may go unnoticed and that’s what happened with a Dallas Cowboys player once.

Emmitt Smith, the legendary running back of the Cowboys, once revealed an embarrassing incident that took place when he was 20 years old and trying to buy a car.

Narrating the story, the Pro Football Hall of Fame star said,I wanted to treat myself to a convertible Mercedes Benz, the SL. It was burgundy. Funny story, though. Before I actually bought the car, the car dealers treated me like I couldn’t afford the car. I walked onto the lot and I was looking at brand new cars and the sales guy took one look at me — a young African American guy — and he walked me to the used car section.”

Emmitt Smith added, “He said, ‘Uh, let’s try to get you into something that you can afford.’ He didn’t have a clue that I was on the Cowboys. So I looked at what he wanted me to look at, and then I said, ‘No, I’ll go with the SL. But I’m not gonna buy it from you.’ And I went to another dealer and got it there.”

Emmitt Smith later bought the car from another dealer. This incident might have happened with other athletes as well. However, this situation made the newly drafted player aware that he needed to put in the hard yards to become a renowned NFL name.

The Dallas Cowboys have had some pretty great players taking to the field over the years. Emmitt Smith, who featured in 201 games, was one of them. He won the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1990, had 4,052 carries for 17,162 yards, and scored 164 touchdowns in a 13-year NFL career.

Over the course of his time in pro football, the three-time Super Bowl winner was selected to play in 8 Pro Bowls. The 1993 NFL MVP also won the Super Bowl XXVIII MVP award. Hence, with so many accolades under his belt, NFL fans will remember Emmitt Smith as an all-time great of the game.
