Peyton Manning‘s rise to greatness can be traced back to his formative years. Probably that’s the reason he has the most MVP awards of all time. Despite the widespread celebration of his remarkable career as an NFL quarterback, it is crucial to acknowledge the influential role played by Peyton Manning’s father, Archie Manning, in shaping his path to greatness.

Guided by his father’s wisdom as a former NFL quarterback, Peyton Manning learned the proper approach to sports. In his junior year, while training with Archie, he fearlessly took on the quarterback role for the New Orleans Saints receivers during a running pattern practice. The following year, Peyton’s exceptional abilities, combined with his father’s guidance, propelled him to become the nation’s top-recruited quarterback. However, there was only one thing that Archie didn’t teach Peyton.

During a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee show, former Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning recounted the story of how he played through a broken jaw during a game. Reflecting on his lack of trash-talking skills, Manning humorously admitted, “I didn’t really engage anything, I wasn’t good at it. My dad never taught me how to talk trash….” Manning went on to share the details of the incident that caused his broken jaw. In a 2001 game against the Miami Dolphins, he was hit underneath the chin strap by Lorenzo Bromell after throwing a pass.

Manning revealed that Bromell had appealed the fine imposed on him for the hit and wanted Manning to advocate on his behalf to the NFL. In response to Bromell’s request, Manning amusingly explained, “I can’t speak. My mouth is wired shut. I’ll call in. I’ll get it increased to 200 grand, buddy. Thanks a lot for breaking my jaw.” The incident of Peyton Manning’s broken jaw may have been a challenging moment for him, but it also showcased his admirable qualities of sportsmanship and pure nature, which he undoubtedly inherited from his father.

Archie Manning once threatened Peyton on the basketball court

Peyton Manning’s competitive spirit shone through even during his early basketball days. One memorable incident involved a grade school basketball team, “bitty basketball,” coached by a teammate’s father, who emphasized fun over winning. However, after a loss, young Peyton couldn’t hold back his frustration and criticized the coach’s abilities. After the team’s loss, the coach said, “Well, we didn’t play our best, but we’ll get them next time.

To this young Peyton Manning fired back and said, “No, the reason we lost is you don’t know what you’re doing as a coach.” Father Manning couldn’t hear this, but he just saw him pointing his finger at the coach and took him to the coach’s home that night for an apology and informed him, “I’m not going to let you play next week.” Despite it, the coach showed kindness and insisted that Peyton continue playing.
