The San Francisco 49ers losing against the Chicago Bears was not a good look for Trey Lance. It was even worse because the 49ers played in the NFL championship last year. And such a team lost to a mediocre team in the NFL. After Lance’s sub-par performance, news about him getting benched from the team spiraled. But the conversation brought attention to the pattern the teams of the NFL have been following.

Trey Lance officially took over the previous starting quarterback of the team, Jimmy Garoppolo. He showed he can throw and can also run well. However, he missed some seriously important opportunities a couple of times. And also threw a fourth-quarter interception when the team was trailing 13-10. 13 of his 28 throw attempts went for 164 yards with the interception.
Along with a lukewarm start to the game, the weather did not favor the San Francisco 49ers. The rain flooded the area, which proved fatal.
But amid the agitation around the young play caller, an analyst and the former linebacker of the Cleveland Browns gives a sound justification for his average performance. Emmanuel Acho makes a point. If the 49ers lose the Week 2 game without a bad climate, people may run out of excuses. Acho said, “You’re just going to have to admit, maybe he’s not that good.”
Joy Taylor, the co-host of Speak, countered his argument. The teams have to give chances to let the new and young quarterbacks grow. And for that to happen, “you’re gonna have to take some lumps and bruises.”

While on the discussion, Taylor smartly points out that teams who have Super Bowl-ready rosters usually go for veteran quarterbacks. She lists the example of various teams. Like, Denver Broncos who signed Russell Wilson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers who went for the NFL GOAT Tom Brady, and the Rams who got Matthew Stafford.
All the mentioned quarterbacks have distinctive amounts of experience. Players who have a firm footing in the game. However, Lance, being younger than them, Taylor noted, “If you don’t want to go through the growing pains of a young quarterback. Don’t draft the quarterback.”
The possibility of the team relegating Lance is at an all-time high if the Week 2 game does not go positively. Losing against the Seattle Seahawks may trigger such a reaction. Wide speculation revolving around the reconstruction of Jimmy G’s contract plays a huge role. Although Garoppolo proves to be a good Number 2, he can take over the 22-year-old’s position if he does not win.
