It was a nail-biting finish at the Augusta National Golf Course as Jon Rahm put on a sensational show to claim the coveted green jacket at the 2023 Masters championship. But if he hadn’t, Patrick Mahomes would have had his back. It turns out that the two-time Super Bowl MVP and avid golfer had a secret strategy up his sleeve to give Rahm an edge.

The QB has been known to use the offseason to hone his golfing skills, a passion he inherited from his father, and he is also good buddies with Rahm. So what was this strategy that Mahomes was going to use to help Rahm?

Patrick Mahomes has a great sense of humor. 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm revealed the mischievous plan the Chiefs QB had to help him play better in the tournament. The story starts with Rahm gulping a tequila shot before a round of golf.

“The owner was drinking. He would force everybody in the group to take a tequila shot, which is fine. One shot doesn’t do anything, two shots over four hours. And we’re playing Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in the offseason. They saw me doing it because I was playing against Ben Herman, the owner of Silverleaf. We always had a tight match, and he would say how the next three four holes after I take a shot, I played better golf,” Rahm said on the ‘Fore Play’ podcast.

After watching Rahm play well with a shot or two of tequila inside him, Mahomes came up with a brilliant plan to help the golfer lift the Masters’ title.

“He was telling me,’ dude I am going to the Masters this year. I’m bringing you shots’,” Rahm added.

While an ingenious plan, it would’ve surely gotten both Mahomes and Rahm in trouble, and the golfer himself said so. Shooting the suggestion down, Rahm said, “I don’t think that’s going to be good for either you or me.” And the Spanish golfer didn’t need that extra boost anyway, as he dominated the Augusta greens without having alcohol in his system.

Jon Rahm lifts off

Jon Rahm was at a disadvantage entering the final round of the Masters’ tournament. He trailed Brooks Koepka by two strokes at that point. Rahm kept his cool and waited for his opponent to falter a bit. Once that happened, the Spaniard was ready to pounce.

Rahm finished the final round with a score of 3-under par while Koepka went the same number of strokes over par. Thus, the Spaniard lifted his first ever Masters tournament trophy, and his second Majors title.
