The 25-year-old went into cardiac arrest during his game with the Cincinnati Bengals in January, leaving everyone in a state of shock. The medical team performed remarkably during the crisis and succeeded in saving Hamlin’s life after his death scare. Over the past few months, Damar Hamling has been gradually recuperating, as was fit enough to take part in the Bills’ OTAs last month.

Six months after the horrifying incident, Damar Hamlin made his way to announce the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2023 ESPY. And the Bills’ training staff won the award for their remarkable efforts that led to Hamlin still being present amongst us after the death scare. This led to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ex-wife, Maria Shriver, sharing a heartwarming tribute to Damar Hamling on her Instagram.

Shriver shared a post of the moment when the 25-year-old safety honored his training staff amidst standing ovations from the crowd. In the caption that accompanied the post, she talked about how “we all have the power to help, to make a difference, to be of service to others-whether it’s our job or not.” The truly inspiring moment of commemorating the people who save Hamlin’s life even led Kelly Stafford, wife of Rams QB Matthew Stafford share it on her Instagram story, stating, “This moment gave me chills♥️”

Furthermore, it was not only an emotional moment to witness but also a moment that will be a part of Hamlin’s life forever, as he broke down commemorating the staff that saved his life.

The safety narrated a video tribute to the staff, before breaking down in tears while welcoming the Bills training team on stage to receive the award. It was certainly a moment filled with emotions, as the entire team embraced Damar Hamlin warmly while he continued to sob throughout the experience. While the safety composed himself, Bills’ head trainer Nate Breske delivered a speech stating, “Damar, first and foremost, thank you for staying alive, brother.” He then went on to talk about how they are not “used to having the spotlight” on them, but take pride in their profession. Breske then went on to urge the audience to “learn CPR and how to use an AED because they save lives.”
