The NFL is playing hardball, and it’s not on the field this time. In a shocking turn of events, the league cracked down on those who dared to tempt fate off the gridiron. Roger Goodell’s league has dealt a mighty blow to a select group of players who dared to cross the line by violating the NFL’s strict gambling policy. One such player caught in the storm is the Indianapolis Colts defensive back, Isaiah Rodgers. And the NFL is not going down a lenient punishment road this time.
It looks like the 4th year cornerback out of UMass will miss the 2023 NFL season as the league undertook stringent measures to deal with the gambling allegations. It won’t be a game or two on the sidelines as Goodell and Co are handing out season-long suspensions for Rodgers and the rest linked to the investigations.

The NFL is investigating Isaiah Rodgers for “pervasive” sports betting, as per the reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 25-year-old CB reportedly bet on Indianapolis Colts games and is one of the many who received suspension notices with the league’s strict crackdown against gambling.
The NFL, worth a combined $143 billion with 32 teams, started its investigations back in early June. And although the league didn’t disclose Rodgers’ name, the secondary took to Twitter with a heartfelt apology, confirming the allegations.

“I want to take full responsibility for my actions. I know I have made mistakes and I am willing to do whatever it takes to repair the situation. The last thing I ever wanted to do was to be a distraction to the Colts organization, my coaches, and my teammates. I’ve let people down that I care about. I made an error in judgement and I am going to work hard to make sure that those mistakes are rectified throughout the process. It’s an honor to play in the NFL and I have never taken that lightly,” Isaiah Rodgers said in a social media post on June 6.
Although the other names involved in the season-long suspension have not yet been disclosed, there have been some talented stars who have faced the wrath of the NFL in the past year, when it comes to breaking the betting laws.
So what do the rules say? And who all have suffered for their blatant disregard?
Other Stars who faced betting-related suspensions in the past few months
According to league rules, NFL players, coaches, league and team officials cannot bet on NFL games. Albeit with certain glaring loopholes, this rule prohibits placing bets at team hotels or facilities or having someone else place a bet for them. Isaiah Rodgers is an addition to the long line of players who saw indefinite bans because of betting practices in 2022-23. The Detroit Lions received a blow to their roster when WRs Jameson Williams, Stanley Berryhill and Quintez Cephus received suspensions for betting in the 2023 offseason. Lions’ safety C.J. Moore and Commanders DE Shaka Toney also met a similar fate.
