In January 2023, former NFL running back Peyton Hillis faced a life-threatening situation when he had to save his son and niece from a swimming accident at a Florida beach. He made a courageous decision to rescue his 8-year-old niece Camille first, who was in more danger, before going back for his 9-year-old son Orry.

He succeeded in saving them, but he fell unconscious on the shore and had to be flown to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. There, Hillis was put to sleep and given a machine to help him breathe. He later said that it was a ?100% miracle? that no one died and that the experience made him appreciate what is really important in life.

“I think the scariest point … was when I’m swimming to my son and I have to pass by him because my niece is in more danger,” Peyton Hillis exclaimed. “I knew that I had to pass him up to get to Camille first. Because, you know, if I didn’t then there’s no way she would’ve made it.”

After a harrowing struggle, Hillis suffered from lung and kidney failure and remained in a coma for about 10 days. He awoke in the ICU, spending two critical weeks there, gradually recovering from his trauma.
