The NFL community mourns the loss of Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Washington and New York Giants linebacker Sam Huff, who died on Saturday at 87. The legend has engraved his name in NFL history with his elite and memorable performances.

Sam Huff back in his days

New York Giants drafted the West Virginia born athlete in 1956. He won an NFL title in his rookie year, indicating his dominance as a linebacker and his influence on the team.

Sam Huff also made five Pro Bowls over the course of his 13-year career, and along with winning an NFL title with the New York Giants in 1956, he made the first-team All-Pro twice and the NFL All-Decade Team of the 1950s. Later he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982.

Washington Redskins and New York Giants paid tribute to the legend

Extending his deepest condolences for the death of the NFL legend, the Washington Football Team owner Daniel Snyder said in a statement. “Anyone who knew Sam knew what an amazing person he was. He was an iconic player and broadcaster for the franchise for over 40 years and was a great friend to our family.”

“He represented the franchise with honor and respect on the field and in the booth and was beloved by our fans. Tanya and I would like to extend our deepest condolences to all of Sam’s family and friends during this time,” the owners’ statement added.

The New York Giants team President John Mara took to Twitter to issue a statement paying tribute to the team legend, calling Huff “one of the greatest Giants of all time.”

“He was the heart and soul of our defense in his era,” Mara wrote in a statement on Twitter. “He almost single-handedly influenced the first chants of ‘Defense, Defense’ in Yankee Stadium.”
