Kyle Shanahan-led San Francisco 49ers raised eyebrows when they traded up to number 3 in the buildup to the 2021 NFL Draft. They gave up their 12th overall pick, a 2021 third-round pick, and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 in exchange for that spot. In essence, they’ve gambled their short-term future in order to draft Trey Lance on April 29.
Multiple reports stated that Mac Jones (Alabama Crimson Tide) and Justin Fields (Ohio State Buckeyes) were both linked to the 49ers. But GM John Lynch and HC Kyle Shanahan had their hearts set on NDSU’s Trey Lance.
Despite missing the 2020 college football season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Lance was the 3rd quarterback to be selected in this year’s draft.

Trey Lance tipped for a bright future with the San Francisco 49ers
Former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker-turned-analyst David Pollack was the latest guest on ESPN’s Get Up on the weekend. He spoke about how Trey Lance is the ‘perfect fit’ in San Francisco under the guidance of the revered head coach, Kyle Shanahan.
He said, “I mean, it’s a perfect fit….go spend five minutes with the kid and you’ll buy every stock you got you can find and Trey Lance, I mean, he’s just, he’s got everything. He’s got the ‘it factor.’ He’s got the wow factor. He can throw he can spin the ball, he can run. he can do everything.”
“Welcome to the #49ers buddy.”

“If you watch his North Dakota State film, they had a fullback, a lot of times he played under centre he played in the shotgun. Kyle Shanahan is going to ask him to do a lot of the same things he did in college. So I don’t know how it gets any better.”
“I know Mac Jones immediately might come in and make better reads and make better decisions. But long term trade, Lance has a chance to be an absolute superstar. I think San Francisco made the right decision,” Pollack said on the show.
Lance threw for 2,786 yards with 28 passing TDs against zero interceptions in 2019. He further rushed for 1,100 yards with 14 rushing TDs. He will battle it out with Jimmy Garoppolo for a starting berth in San Francisco this summer.
