For a long time, the NFL world assumed that the secret sauce behind Bill Belichick’s recipe for success was a certain quarterback called Tom Brady. However, that’s not entirely true. There’s one thing that has helped Bill even more on the way to six championships. And this time, it is a special feature that he looks for in his guys. Bill likes big butts and he cannot lie.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart recently made the revelation at a coaching clinic. And it looks like Belichick’s fetish has guided him in securing the correct guys in his two-decade-plus New England Patriots career. Smart and coach Nick Saban went deep into what keeps Bill busy during the Scouting Combines.

Narrating an incident that took place during his time as the safeties coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2006 under HC Saban, Kirby Smart gave a glimpse into the simplicity behind Belichick’s genius. Do you want to block the best offensive tackles? Get bigger men. Just read and react to the situation. And Bill has a knack for spotting the big butt talents during pre-season workouts.

For Belichick, the 40-yard dash and the vertical jump come later. Saban dragged Smart to where the Patriots HC was scouting the prospects to see how his mind worked during the workouts.

“I want you to sit by him and listen to him during the Combine as they talk about players. When they get to where the 40-yard dash is, they got behind ’em where the thing starts at. I’m like, why are we here? You can’t time the finish. And he’s like, no, Bill likes to look to see how big their a– is when they get down into that 40-yard stance cause he wants to sign the biggest a– defensive linemen that he can sign,” the Bulldogs’ head coach said.
Is there a strategic explanation behind it?

Bill Belichick takes his job in the National Football League pretty seriously after being the most decorated head coach in league history. With the highest number of Super Bowl wins as a head coach, Bill obviously had a logical explanation for the big-butt d-linemen.
“Those backers want to line up behind those guys and be protected by ’em, and they wanna have an anchor,” Nick Saban had explained to Smart.

Belichick’s fetish certainly rubbed off on Smart as he acquired some big defensive linemen in the future. Alabama’s Terrence Cody, Marcell Dareus, A’Shawn Robinson, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Daron Payne made it to the top 60 picks. And Georgia’s Jordan Davis went to the Eagles as the 13th overall pick last year. This year’s big man on the board is Bulldogs tackle Jalen Carter. Carter can also expect a top pick if teams choose to look past his sketchy legal history.
