The Californian-born was the second overall pick for the Saints. However, the agent and Bush thought about exploring New York for a prospective career. They called up the Super Bowl coach to inform the decision. “So my agent called Sean Payton and was like: ‘Don’t draft us. We not coming. Don’t draft us, all right?’. And Sean’s like, just verbatim: ‘F*ck you. I’m drafting Reggie Bush. And hung the phone up. Swear to God, hung the phone up,” he said.
Why Reggie Bush wanted to miss the Saints’ Offer
Bush’s impressive stint at the UFC made him a favorite in the NFL draft. Houston Texans chose to pick the RB as No.1 overall. However, they decided against the earlier decision and went ahead with North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams. Meanwhile, the Saints held on to the No.2 pick, Titans at No.3, and the Jets at No.4.
However, the talented star had some concerns about going to the Saints. This was because they did not have a home stadium due to Hurricane Katrine. As a result, they thought it was not the best situation to go into the Saints. “Third pick. Big city. Marketing. … You’re gonna make a lot more money. So I was kind of sold an idea. Like, ‘All right, let’s do it,” Bush told the agent.
