The tension has been palpable in Baltimore as the Ravens and their star quarterback Lamar Jackson engaged in a high-stakes standoff over his contract negotiations. With the 2023 NFL Draft underway, Ravens fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief as Jackson has signed a new deal. With Odell Beckham Jr also in their arsenal, the Ravens can even look forward to a Super Bowl contention-worthy season. After Jackson’s wish of wanting a fully guaranteed contract like Deshaun Watson’s, he has finally agreed to the terms of the new contract offered by the Ravens.
And the deal seems to be heavily influenced by the recent $255 million 5-year contract extension the Philadelphia Eagles signed their QB Jalen Hurts. What’s most interesting in all this is that Jackson negotiated this deal without a certified agent, instead opting to have his mother represent him. With no agent fees to worry about, one can only wonder how much money Jackson has saved and how much his mother has earned from this groundbreaking negotiation. Will this set a new trend in contract negotiations for NFL players, or is it a one-time anomaly?

Comparing it to Hurts’ contract, Jackson will earn an average annual value of $52 million. This is a million more than Hurts, who will be earning an average annual value of $51 million. Jackson is, at the moment, the highest-paid player in the NFL with his new contract.

Furthermore, Lamar Jackson has earned $5 million more in total value and guarantees than Jalen Hurts received recently. After a long stalemate because of the Deshaun Watson contract from the Cleveland Browns in 2022, Hurts’ contract has helped in moving the market for QBs forward. The Eagles deal helped the Ravens set up a structural framework for the way the dilemma with their QB was to be handled. Now, Jackson’s contract with further pave the way for QBs who come next, including Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow.
And it seems like not having an agent did not actually hinder Jackson in his contract negotiations. He only benefited by saving on the agent fee and will keep all the money in the family.

Lamar Jackson and his mother have been handling the QB’s negotiation by themselves in the league. Despite not having a certified agent for himself, the deal looks well negotiated to suit both Jackson’s and the franchise’s requirements. His mother has been at the forefront, acting as his agent for a long time now. According to a tweet by Black Millionaires, after saving the 3% agent fees, his mom will be earning $7.8 million in total. That is not bad at all, considering how they are keeping it all within the family. It also goes to show that agent or no agent, Jackson’s performance in the league, makes the Ravens believe in the abilities of their QB for the foreseeable future.
