8th-year running back Ezekiel Elliott remains franchise less after the Dallas Cowboys ended their 7-year relationship with him this off-season. And Zeke might make his way into the AFC with interest emerging from the Buffalo Bills camp. But will the 27-year-old be a good fit for Josh Allen and his dual-threat offense?

Despite breaking his fibula in the playoffs, the Cowboys tagged Tony Pollard as the franchise running back. And keeping the cap-heavy Zeke on payroll almost became an impossibility after that. However, Jerry Jones bringing back Elliott after checking out the open market options remains a likely scenario as well.

Can Ezekiel Elliott be the missing piece of the Buffalo and Super Bowl equation?

In his seven years of playing for America’s Team, the 27-year-old former Ohio State Buckeyes running back carried the ball 1881 times over 8262 yards. Zeke also caught 305 receptions over 2336 yards, putting up 80 combined touchdowns since 2016. In 2019, the 2x NFL rushing leader (2016 and 2018) signed a whopping $90 million six-year extension and has four years and $52.9 million left on the deal.

Former Buccaneers WR and Super Bowl champion Keyshawn Johnson thinks the Cowboys can re-sign the 3x Pro Bowler. And he isn’t the only one who thinks Jerry should get it done. However, besides that, Josh Allen and Co look like the best fit according to the ESPN NFL Live analyst. “Watch for Bills,” team and agent sources told Heavy Sports reporter Matt Lombardo.

The Dallas Cowboys will obviously be a good fit. But if you start to look at it. Buffalo wants to try to run the football outside of Josh Allen. I think when you look at Zeke, it wasn’t necessarily about his performance. It was about the money,” Johnson said while talking about the threat Elliott adds near the goal line and end zone. “And Buffalo needs that help. And Adam [Schefter] did mention the Cowboys,” he added.

Can the Bills afford Zeke?

Elliott had a grave fall in his performance last season, especially compared to the 1631 rushing yards in his rookie season. Due to a recurring right knee injury, he could only run for a little more than half of that last year. Zeke ranked the lowest in the league among RBs last season with his 3.9 yards per carry. His in-house competition, Pollard, ranked 4th in the same category with 5.9 yards per carry.

However, he still showed his worth with his 12 touchdowns. Add to that, the catching and pass-blocking efficiency and Josh Allen won’t frown at the prospect. However, Buffalo only has around $14 million in cap room after the first wave of free agency. And Zeke will have to agree to a lower payout if he has the Lombardi on his mind.

The short-yardage help from the 6 foot 226 lbs Zeke will certainly give a lot of room to Allen to operate the Buffalo Bills offense. Buffalo already has Nyheim Hines and James Cook on the roster to take the load of Elliott. It looks like the perfect fit. Can Zeke be the missing piece in Buffalo’s Super Bowl puzzle?
