Patrick Mahomes has a way about himself. While his dazzling passes on the football field make many marvels at his unfathomable arm strength, the Kansas City Chiefs‘ QB1 is equally gifted in other sports. Being the competitive being that he is, Mahomes often issues open challenges to legends but his showmanship flourishes in two particular disciplines.

Despite winning two Super Bowl rings in his NFL career, and securing himself a 10-year $450 Million contract, the QB’s first love was baseball. The Super Bowl MVP was this close to signing up for the MLB but the future panned out differently. Still, baseball remains an integral part of Patrick Mahomes’ sporting identity, and so does Texas Tech University.

Mahomes committed to Texas Tech University, but his choice of sport was still a question mark. He would often split his time between the football and baseball teams, but thankfully, his mother Randi Mahomes got him to decide on one. As Mahomes shifted his undivided attention to football, his baseball career had to take a backseat, appearing in just three games with no hits in two at-bats, and allowing three runs as a pitcher. And Texas Tech baseball recently gave him another opportunity to celebrate making their way to regional finals.

The Texas team is set to face UConn, and it is safe to assume Mahomes will cheering the team from afar. Still, Mahomes’ love for the game lingers around as he recently made eyes turn at the annual Big Slick softball game. Mahomes even made many applaud his prowess at the expense of Emmy Award-winning actor Eric Stonestreet. As Stonestreet grounded to Mahomes, the Super Bowl MVP broke out his behind-the-back throw to first.

While the spectacular move soon took over the Internet, it also makes one wonder about a ‘What If’ for the ages.

Could Patrick Mahomes be in the MLB?

Turns out that prior to the Kansas City Chiefs drafted him in 2017, Detriot could have been the landing spot for Patrick Mahomes. The Super Bowl MVP was this close to embarking on his MLB journey. The Detroit Tigers were hellbent on acquiring Mahomes and even drafted him in the 37th round. The man behind Mahomes getting drafted into the MLB was The then-Tigers scout, Tim Grieve.

Grieve was aware that Mahomes would eventually choose football as his calling, but yet an effort had to be made, “With Patrick, it was as simple as ‘here’s a kid who looks like he’s going to play football BUT…let’s be that team that started to build the relationship so that if he wants to play baseball 2-4 years down the road, we’ve got our foot in the door,” While Grieve read Mahomes to perfection, the Chiefs’ QB1 might have exceeded all expectations placed on him and hopefully will continue to do so.
