Since at least June 15, when the Chiefs turned Union Station into a Super Bowl LVII ring party, the talk’s been all about last season’s glory fading into the rearview mirror. Well, The Kansas City Chiefs just got served a big reality check. The champs stumbled against the Detroit Lions in the 2023 NFL season kickoff, losing by a razor-thin 21-20. Travis Kelce’s absence stung, no doubt. Now, it’s all hands on deck as the Chiefs reload their arsenal.
Just four days after that stumble, the Chiefs are getting back their defensive powerhouse. This ain’t over, folks!

Well, the team might not have hit the end zone much against the Lions, but the front office just made a game-winning touchdown move of their own! After shuffling through interior defensive linemen like a deck of cards during training camp and preseason while Chris Jones was playing hard to get, the franchise and their ace defensive tackle Chris Jones have reportedly just inked a new one-year deal. That puts the final nail in the coffin of a holdout that kicked off in training camp and stretched into Week 1 of the regular season, leaving the Chiefs without their all-pro defensive tackle against the Detroit Lions.
Letsssss gooooooooooo ⏳
— Chris Jones (@StoneColdJones) September 11, 2023
The franchise said in a statement, “Chris is an elite player in this league, and over the last seven years, he’s really developed into a leader on our team.” Brett Veach, the GM wizard of the Chiefs, even credited the defensive superstar, dubbing him the game-changer behind the franchise’s winning formula. Stating that it was if top priority to secure Jones in the Chiefs’ uniform.
He also mentioned the Katz brothers, the NFL’s agent MVPs, for being instrumental in the negotiations. Veach said, “Through this process two things were obvious, Chris wanted to be a Chief, and the Katz brothers worked diligently on his behalf.”

Money talks: The Chiefs bet big on Jones – Will it pay off against the Jaguars?
While Jones was holding out, this defensive dynamo racked up daily fines like touchdowns at $50,000 a pop for each day missed in camp, and he even forfeited a game check! Heading into the season, he was slated for a base salary of $19.5 million. Now that the terms have been renegotiated, it is still not known just how massive that raise for Jones turned out to be.
When it comes to Jones, the Chiefs are putting their money where their mouth is, and it’s a touchdown of a deal. This four-time Pro Bowler isn’t just a player; he’s a gridiron force to be reckoned with. With two Super Bowl wins under his belt and fresh off a first-team All-Pro season where he tied his career-high with a jaw-dropping 15.5 sacks, he’s a game-wrecker of the highest order. With Jones back in the defensive trenches, the Chiefs are gearing up for a helmet-clashing showdown with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Could Jones be the missing link to another Super Bowl run? Let the gridiron battles begin!
