During his time as a player, Flanagan once shared that he was earning a low salary of only $12,000 a year from the Detroit Lions. He recounted, years later, how he had to work off-season jobs to make ends meet. He said, “We always worked in the offseason. I started off selling steel in Detroit, calling on General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. I did that for two years, and then I got into real estate. I sold real estate for two years.” However, Flanagan’s talent and dedication on the field did not go unnoticed, and he was recognized for his exceptional skills by being selected for the Pro Bowl in 1969, 1970, 1971, and 1973.

Despite his success, he sought opportunities outside of the NFL and attempted to join the World Football League. However, the deal did not come to fruition. Due to a contract dispute with the Lions, Flanagan eventually signed with the San Diego Chargers in 1975, which marked a turning point in his career. He received the highest salary of his football journey, earning a noteworthy $37,000 a year. However, the following year, in 1976, Flanagan decided to retire from professional football.
