A prominent NFL analyst and former NFL coach found himself in hot waters after he said something controversial about the LGBTQ+ community. Tony Dungy has long been a problematic figure in the league. But one of his latest tweets did not sit well with many NFL fans.

The NFL Hall of Fame coach faced intense scrutiny when he tweeted a false conspiracy theory. Fans were livid, and some even asked NBC to fire the analyst.

The former Bucs coach and analyst promoted a false narrative of students identifying as cats because of which schools provided litter boxes for him in place of bathrooms. Many believe that he used the tweet as a way to discredit LGBTQ people.

The tweet came in response to a Daily Wire story where a Minnesota state legislator asked schools to provide students in grades 4 to 12 with menstrual products in the bathrooms. Dungy replied in a now-deleted tweet: “That’s nothing. Some school districts are putting litter boxes in the school bathrooms for the students who identify as cats. Very important to address every student’s needs.”

Although the 67-year-old has had a long history of promoting anti-LGBTQ thoughts (for example, he once said he would not want Michael Sam on his team and also said that he didn’t agree with Jason Collin’ way of living), this tweet was the most extreme statement that he ever publicly made.

Fans press NBC to take actions

Even though Dungy has shown his homophobic and transphobic behavior outwardly and on many occasions, NBC took no action against him. This time he did not express his views on same-sex marriage but promoted a narrative that was proved false. Fans wanted his removal from the network right away.

However, NBC and NBC Sports are yet to react to this rhetoric of Dungy. Are statements like these enough to fire famous and elite coaches and executives from sports networks? Cyd Zeigler from OUTSPORTS believes that there need to be repercussions for hurting the LGBTQ community. “There is no more hiding behind Matthew, Mark, Luke or John on this one. It’s time Dungy, NBC and NBC Sports engage on this topic in thoughtful, meaningful ways.”
