After this announcement, there might be some unsettlement among NFL fans. Trump being re-elected might not bode well for the NFL players, teams, management, and fans.

NFL and previous entanglements with Trump

The possible unrest among NFL fans is not without basis. The NFL fans have not forgotten the impact Colin Kaepernick’s career took after his protest. Around this time, Donald Trump had made his thoughts about protesting very clear. Athletes and pro athletes have always had a huge impact on their viewership. The NFL fans have shown support for their athletes and the statements that they’ve wanted to make.

With Trump announcing his intent to run in the elections again, there is no certainty that a case like Kaepernick’s won’t happen again. When athletes in the NFL previously used their platform to protest, Trump had a lot to say. Former POTUS had urged the NFL owners to fire players who would kneel for the national anthem. In his speeches, he has also called for action from the fans and said, “When people like yourselves turn on television and you see those people taking the knee when they’re playing our great national anthem. The only thing you could do better is if you see it, even if it’s one player, leave the stadium.”

Even back then, the NFL had issued a statement. The commissioner, Roger Goodell had spoken up against what he believed were divisive comments’ He’d said, “Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game, and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities.” Keeping in mind the conflict the NFL has had with Trump, there is an understandable amount of apprehension with him announcing his candidacy for the 2024 elections.
