One of the most physically gifted athletes in the NFL had a phobia of water. Due to an incident in his childhood, Metcalf could not get into a swimming pool. The Seahawks quarterback helped DK overcome the phobia during a trip to Mexico.
Why does DK Metcalf fear water?
DK Metcalf and Russell Wilson have become one of the most prolific quarterback-wide receiver duos in Seattle Seahawks history. But before they dominated the football fields, the Seattle Seahawks players took a late winter vacation to Mexico. This is where the WR and the QB first bonded really well. A swimming pool was also involved in bringing the players closer.
During the interview with Bleacher Report, the journalist Taylor Rooks told DK Metcalf that she had read somewhere that Wilson taught Metcalf how to swim.
“[Russell Wilson] taught me how to swim, yeah.” DK adds, “See, I almost drowned when I was little, and it, like, traumatized me to where if the water gets, like, right here [near chest], my heart starts beating fast as heck. So I’m like, all right. He was like, “We’re going to Mexico. You’re chilling with me, you know, we’re going to go to the pool.” I said, “The pool? How deep is it?”
He said, “Oh, four feet. You can stand up in it.” I was like, “All right, bet.” We get to the pool. It’s a six-foot end or a seven-foot end or something like that. He was like, “Oh, I forgot about that.” I was like, “Yeah, I bet you did.”

After inviting DK Metcalf to the Pool, Russell Wilson wanted him to just get in. “[Wilson] was like, “All right, jump in.” Said Metcalf. “I’m like, “Bro, I’ll put my feet in. I’m not jumping in that water.” He was like, “All right, just trust me. I got you.”
The first day, all I did was stand in the water. Second day, he got me holding my breath underwater. Taught me how to breathe and relax. And then, the third day, I was pushing off the wall, swimming a little bit. Yeah, he taught me how to swim a little bit. He got my confidence up. I’ll give him props.”
