The mystery surrounding Stefon Diggs’ non-attendance from mandatory minicamp practice has finally been cleared up. Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott, who was initially tight-lipped about the star wide receiver’s whereabouts, admitted that there were some non-football issues that needed to be resolved. But is that the real reason for his absence?

Quarterback Josh Allen has also suggested that there have been private conversations happening within the team. Head coach McDermott, who received a lot of criticism following two disappointing playoff defeats, understands just how important Diggs is for the team’s success in 2023. However, Diggs is dissatisfied with his position within the offense and feels that he has little say in the play-calling, despite having a lucrative contract.

Stefon Diggs was very angry when the Bills lost to the Bengals in the playoffs, and evidently acted upset on the side of the field where everyone could see him. “He’s a fiery competitor,” QB Josh Allen in the post-game press conference. “He wants the ball. Whatever it was that we couldn’t get him the ball tonight, we’re going to have to learn from.”

It was a bitter end to the season for the Bills’ offense, as they fell 27–10 to the Bengals in the playoffs. Diggs, who led the league in receiving yards, was visibly unhappy with the outcome. He reportedly ‘left the locker room angrily’ after the game, showing his displeasure.

Stefon Diggs also made a statement by skipping Tuesday’s voluntary workouts, signaling his dissatisfaction with the coaching staff. But soon after, rejoined the team the next day on Wednesday, per McDermott, he excused him from the mandatory minicamp. Amid Diggs’ absence, Bills QB Josh Allen exclaimed, “Internally, we’re working on some things not football related.” The coach also said that he and Diggs talked and made things better. But reports are linking that Diggs did not come to practice because he was unhappy.

Diggs and Bills: A mutual need for victory?

According to reports from the ‘Boston Globe’, the star wide receiver was back on the practice field after missing some time, but Diggs’ head coach, Sean McDermott, stressed how crucial Diggs was to the team’s offensive firepower. Despite Diggs’ recent unhappiness, his performance in the playoff loss to the Bengals highlighted his ineffectiveness. Adding to his troubles, Diggs now had to adapt to a new offensive coordinator, Ken Dorsey, who took over from Brian Daboll, the person instrumental in Diggs’ success over the past two years.
