There was a time in the NFL when the image of a QB was associated with the NFL GOAT Tom Brady. With a career spanning over 23 seasons, Brady revolutionized the image of the QB in the NFL with his spectacular game. Winning 7 Super Bowl championships is no joke, as it is a testament to the quality of player that he was in the league. But with Brady retired, a new era of QBs is in the making. Last season, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts made history as the first starting black QBs to face off in a Super Bowl. They bring in a distinct style of QB play into the league, that has led Mahomes to win 2 Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs.
So is the QB game going through an evolution? Former NFL player Marshawn Lynch believes that the game of QB in the NFL is in the process of a new era. An era that is different from that of the 7X Super Bowl champ Tom Brady. Despite earlier criticizing Russell Wilson’s dismal last season, he gets real about the evolution of black QBs in the league.

During a recent episode of the Tyreek Hill ‘Cheetah’ podcast managed by ‘The Vocal Podcast Network’, former Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch was discussing how the game has changed in the league for QBs from the time Tom Brady used to dominate the league. He further talked about the league having more prominent black QBs than before, mentioning the names of Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, and others.
When Tyreek Hill asked Lynch whether it is the new evolution of black QBs, he said, “I think it’s just the evolution of QBs. Because if you look at it, there’s a change in that. You got a Russell Wilson, Jalen, Lamar, who motherfu*kers are gonna take off if they ain’t got what they want. The evolution of QBs is for sure changing unless them white boys gonna get some of that juice.”

It seems that the former RB still has faith in his former Seattle Seahawks teammate Wilson even after speaking up on his dismal debut for the Denver Broncos. During an episode of the Richard Sherman Podcast, Lynch spoke up on how they couldn’t reach out to Wilson directly and were not fond of contacting him through his manager. While Wilson’s Broncos debut may have been disappointing, other QBs like Hurts and Mahomes are rising to the top in the position. So is this new era the emergence of black QBs in the league?
The revolutionizing era of black QBs?
When we think of QB, names like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Aaron Rodgers pop up in our minds. Hence, it is not a surprise that the QB position has mostly been dominated by white players. Especially during the era of Tom Brady and his 7X Super Bowl championship run. But starting a few years ago, black QBs are making much more of their presence felt in the league. Patrick Mahomes has gone on to win two Super Bowls with the Chiefs as their black QB. Lamar Jackson, who recently signed a new contract extension with the Baltimore Ravens, has been their key player in that position. Even in the 2023 draft, you got names like Bryce Young and CJ Stroud, being the top draft picks for the QB position. It is without a doubt that black QBs are revolutionizing the way the position is played.
