Montana was recruited by colleges in 2020. He went to Inglewood High School in California and chose to play for Colorado instead of other schools like Auburn and BYU. He was considered an average player and was ranked as the 957th-best player in his class.

In his first year playing for Colorado, under head coach Carl Darrell, the team did okay, but it wasn’t great. The next year, they started losing a lot and in 2022, they only won one game out of 12. Coach Darrell was fired mid-season and an interim coach took over.
