Wednesday’s scouting combine in Indianapolis is turning out to be as interesting for Derek Carr as his rookie Combine in 2014. The former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback is opening up a third option to choose from after meeting with the Saints and the Jets in the last month.
Derek Carr entered free agency on February 15, when the Raiders released him to avoid a $29.25 million cap hit. And despite the continued interest of AFC teams, an otherwise easier route to the playoffs in the NFC, and eventual postseason success may be too tempting for Carr.

Carr ended his Raiders episode after getting benched for the last two games this season. Overall, he had an unimpressive season, the worst since his 2014 rookie season. With 3522 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, his 14 interceptions in the 15 games played turned out to be costly for Las Vegas. Despite reuniting with college teammate and star WR Davante Adams, and perhaps over-relying on him at times, Derek only managed to connect for 60.8% of his attempted passes.

Up until the 6th of March, all eyes in Indianapolis will be on the talented draft prospects. However, veteran Carr is also going to be present there to share some of the spotlights. The Raiders’ all-time passing yards leader is meeting several teams in the 2023 NFL scouting combines. However, according to Ian Rapoport’s official report, the New York Jets, the New Orleans Saints, and the Carolina Panthers are top of the list for Carr.
When QB Derek Carr arrives in Indianapolis today, he’ll have in-person free agent meetings with 3 teams: The #Jets, the #Saints, and the #Panthers. He’s already visited New Orleans and NYJ, now he adds Carolina and maybe more. Coaches, GMs, owners all in the same spot this week.

The Saints and Jets enjoy a head start, having already hosted the 31-year-old. Taking the broadway bound lane is also a choice. Especially with the New York visit going extremely well between the two parties. And the Jets have already expressed their admiration for the 4x Pro Bowler after claiming that Carr can become a future first-ballot Hall of Famer with the Gang Green.
So why is Carr meeting the Panthers?

Derek Carr has reached the playoffs only once and lost in the wild-card round in 2021. And he won’t have a simple time with the Jets in the highly competitive AFC East. Josh Allen’s Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins can create significant problems for the 9-year veteran.
Carr knows that the NFC gives him a higher chance of making the playoffs. And he has not ruled off the Carolina Panthers for his next destination. With Tom Brady out of the picture, the NFC South is up for grabs. And Derek looks to have his eyes on the divisional throne. However, teams might find it difficult to match his $35 million annual demand.
