This new deal will put him through the 2025 season for the Raiders. However, the star claimed to have adjusted his salary cap for a very specific reason that will help the team to execute their future ambitions. The 31-year-old will be entering the last season of the previous contract he signed in 2017.
Derek Carr confessed about taking a salary cap hit
For the past 8 years, the 31-year-old veteran has been a prominent player for the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders did not disclose the details about that deal yet; however, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler claimed that Carr agreed to a three-year, $121.5 million extension that includes a no-trade clause and runs through the 2025 season. But the QB took a cap hit compared to his previous contract signed in 2017. It was a five-year, $125 million deal, making it the richest contract in NFL history then.

According to Carr, there’s a specific reason behind it. “I think my cap number went down this year. I don’t care how we do it. Let’s just make it to where, at the end of the day I’m fine, and my family is protected, we can protect and take care of my teammates’ futures, too.” the Raiders QB said, according to Anthony Galaviz of the Fresno Bee.

The quarterback’s salary adjustments helped him reunite with former college teammate and elite wide receiver Davante Adams, who was traded from the Green Bay Packers this off-season. It was a pretty lucrative deal from the Raiders’ perspective. The receiver was signed for a five-year, $141.25 million deal.

On Wednesday, after the deal got finalized, Carr said his extension was structured to allow for the signings of Adams, Jones, and “hopefully Hunter [Renfrow] and Foster [Moreau] and those guys can stay here.” He also mentioned Darren Waller in the group. “I went through a heartbreak the last time I signed my contract – my best friend left. And I didn’t want that to ever happen again.” Carr added to his statements.
Carr is one of the most trusted QB for the Raiders
The Fresno State alumni got selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft. The Raiders offered him a four-year deal. So far, the QB holds franchise records in passing 31,700 yards, 193 touchdown passes, and 30 game-winning drives. The previous season was one of his best campaigns, with 4,804 passing yards and 23 touchdowns for the Raiders.
