It’s been less than four months since the University of Colorado fired head coach Karl Dorrell. Only to rope in former two-sport athlete and 2x Super Bowl champion, Deion Sanders. And the initial period of his reign was filled with uncertainties for the CU players, with Deion bringing his own athletes. However, things are evidently settling into place. The Buffaloes football program just set a landmark record in ticket sales.
Moreover, the numbers have almost tripled from the previous high, and Coach Prime’s indelible impact on the Buffaloes is palpable in this success. Especially after the team finished the last season with a 1-11 run and fifteen of their last seventeen seasons with a losing record.

For the first time since 2018, the Buffaloes intra-squad Spring Game will have a record attendance as the school sold out 45,000 tickets. This shattered the previous Spring Game attendance record of 17,800 in 2008. Colorado Buffaloes athletic director Rick George announced in a press statement that the April 22 Black & Gold Day Spring Football game, presented by Arrow, will also be nationally televised on ESPN, being the only other game on TV besides the national champions, Georgia Bulldogs playing on ESPN2.
The ESPN coverage will also feature some top names including Colorado alum Chris Fowler, former Heisman-winning Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III, and sports broadcaster Quint Kessenich.

Not only are the 45,000 tickets sold a massive 152 percent rise from the previous high of 17,800, but it is also more than the combined ticket sales in the last nine spring games before Prime Time arrived in Denver. There will also be a Field Day presented by the Children’s Hospital of Colorado on April 22. Accompanying that will be the Colorado University soccer and volleyball programs kicking in at the Kittredge Field and the CU Event Center, respectively.
Why did Sanders join the Buffaloes?
The entire NFL world was shocked when highly successful JSU Tigers coach Deion Sanders left for Colorado last December. This came after a 27-6 winning record at Jacksonville, including back-to-back South West Atlantic Conference championships. However, Coach Prime knew that no SWAC school had ever won the college football National Championship. And Sanders definitely wanted one.

“Sooner or later, you have to really look in the mirror and say, ‘Are they going to get there? No. Do they even want to get there?’ And I had to ask those questions. And really be honest with it,” he said this month during his appearance on The Pivot Podcast. The head coach also clarified that money was definitely not the primary concern.
