The last twelve days have been somewhat of a rollercoaster for Philly cornerback Darius Slay. After initially deciding to part ways, Philadelphia Eagles are keeping him for one more year. However, this news came out unintentionally before the official announcement because of Darius’ wife, Jennifer. What did she do?

After thanking the organization and posting a heartfelt farewell message to Philly, Darius was forced to announce that he was back for the Birds because his wife leaked the information on her Twitter account. This left the All-Pro cornerback with no choice. But how did this happen?

Jennifer spilt the beans

Nothing but love Philly!! Let’s see where we heading next,” Slay tweeted yesterday after the first reports of his release. And Jennifer also bid her farewell to the city of brotherly love. “It’s been real Philly!!! It’s all love,” she wrote on her Instagram story. However, the couple had no idea that things were about to take a wicked u-turn.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted that the brotherly love for Darius was not over. “Eagles never officially released CB Darius Slay today and now one source said that the Pro-Bowl CB is “expected to stay with the Eagles. It’s not final, but that’s the way it is looking right now.” A new deal could be in the works,” the report said.

And Jennifer didn’t wait a minute before tweeting, “We here baby!

And she even liked a ton of tweets on her timeline, discussing a potential return for Darius.

When Jennifer outed him, the 5x Pro Bowler had to confirm the reports. “Back like I never left!!! Run it back, Birds,” he tweeted. But why was the CB reportedly released and then again re-signed to the same franchise?

Darius Slay was cut and re-signed mainly to clear cap room

After three years with the Eagles, including a Super Bowl LVII run where his team fell 38-35 in a close-fought title game to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, Slay and his agent Drew Rosenhaus wanted to test the free agency. And the Eagles suddenly realized they don’t want him gone. Also, the financials were always at the back of their minds.

Philly would have an additional $17 million in cap room if they released Darius Slay. However, they still had to bear the $26.1 million cap hit till June 1, which would have left them with an $8.6 million dead cap in 2023, and $13.8 million in 2024. 32-year-old Slay has 26 career picks and two touchdown returns, picking up 7 of those INTs in his three years in Philadelphia, and the remaining during his time with the Lions.

Slay’s fellow All-Pro cornerback James Bradberry also signed a three-year extension on Wednesday. Also, center Jason Kelce, 6x Pro Bowler defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, and DE Brandon Graham are some of the other Pro Bowlers returning to the formidable Philly defense from 2022. And Slay and company will surely look for that re-run to the Super Bowl.
