When it comes to business, the Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is a genius. He took the ultimate risk of owning a money-losing team and building a strong empire surrounding its brand value.
Today, North Texas City boasts of leading the most expensive sports franchise in the world. And all credit goes to this 79-year-old young stalwart, who is still passionate about the sport and the league.

While speaking to Bob Costas of the Back On the Record chat show in November last year, the businessman revealed that he loves to operate behind the scenes, enjoying the game and being more involved. It turns out, that this strategy worked out for Jones over the past three decades.
“We want you to enjoy the nuances of the game,” he said. “As a matter of fact, on a personal basis, the more transparent, the more you’re behind the scenes, the more you’re involved, to me, the more you enjoy the game,” Jones explained.
Hailing from a business family, Jones is a born salesman. In 1989, when he betted on an undervalued team like the Dallas Cowboys, people mocked him for his choice. However, he was determined to take the risk and aspired for more than anybody could imagine.
“A few years after I bought the team, I’m out in Los Angeles having lunch with David Hill and Ed Goren of Fox. At that time, there were a lot of negative headlines about the Cowboys,” Jones narrates an incident. “People are saying, ‘The owner’s an outlaw!’ And so that day I told them, ‘I’m tightening the lid on this franchise. We’re gonna get control of this team.” he proudly explained the entire scenario.
Jerry Jones made money with his unique marketing strategy
With his investment of $140 million in the Cowboys 33 years ago, Jerry Jones managed to build America’s most exclusive sports club. Instead of spending money on recruiting top athletes, he poured billions of dollars through real estate and attracted business ventures to invest in North Texas City.

Soon the psyche of Dallas started changing, and Jones incorporated businesses and big tycoons into the Cowboys brand. It helped the franchise to empower its foundations, which is money for every other team playing in the NFL. Once the funds are in the bank, the Cowboys can afford to attract interest from players and the audience.

Ray Perryman, an economist who deeply analyzed the evolution of Dallas over decades, explained that Jones’ strategy not only helped the residents and other ventures to flourish but also helped the city re-establish itself as one of the modern cities on the world map. It will be interesting to see how long Jones can uphold the legacy of the Cowboys that he built over the years.
