Dallas Cowboys‘ quarterback, Dak Prescott, has quickly become very sought after in the NFL. The two-time Pro Bowler is up for contract renewal this year and negotiations have been rather long drawn. The Cowboys wanted to secure Prescott’s services for five years while the quarterback wanted a shorter four-year contract instead. Either way, the team did not once hesitate to say that Dak was on their long-term plans. Even the quarterback has admitted to wanting to continue playing with the Cowboys and had said, “something will get done.” And now, the long months of negotiations seem to be nearing a close.

Dak Prescott to sign a Franchise tender

According to EPSN, Prescott is set to sign an exclusive franchise tender worth $31.4 million with the Cowboys today. Upon signing, the two sides will have till July 15 to finalize a long-term deal. However, this also means that Dak will be contractually obligated to report to Cowboys training camp irrespective of a long-term agreement.

When asked if Prescott was the team’s franchise quarterback earlier this year, head coach Mike McCarthy said, “Definitely. It’s exactly where we want to be with Dak. I think what he’s done to this point speaks for itself. Dak is in a business situation right now. I’ve gone through this as a head coach with a number of my players in the past and, like anything, I think it’s just time to be patient and let the business people work out the business matter.

What analysts think of the new Prescott-Cowboys deal

If this deal goes through, the Conerly Trophy winner will be among the highest-paid players in Cowboys’ history. “This is a player who, over four years with the Cowboys, has not made more than a combined five million dollars… At the very least, you are a wealthier man once you agree to this today. Which means you are in a different stratosphere both economically and among the league’s best, as far as quarterbacks go in highest-paid,” said Good Morning Football’s Peter Schrager.

Former fullback, Michael Robinson said that Dak’s job is “pretty secure and again, if you keep on putting up numbers like last year, you keep on putting up wins like you’ve been putting up over the past three or four years – 40 wins, only second to the great, the G.O.A.T., Tom Brady – yes, Dak Prescott will get all the money he wants.

I knew he wasn’t gonna hold out… He’s not the type. It’s not in his DNA. And I kinda hope that he would’ve. I think it would’ve been best for him, but he wasn’t gonna do it,” added Kyle Brandt.

He further said that with a new coach and the pandemic, it’s already difficult for the Cowboys and it will continue to be so. In such a time, losing Prescott would only add to the burden. Moreover, Amari Cooper’s deal next year will be a huge expense to take care of. And above all, they are looking to bring Jamal Adams on board!

So, it’s a lot of rough seas coming. But at least they are there; they’re civil… But man, there’s work to be done.”
